04/02/2020: Update from Superintendent Yolanda Brunt regarding emergency measures related to current pandemic:

Version en Espanol

Greetings Covert Families,

On April 2, 2020, Governor Whitmer signed an Executive Order Suspending Face-to-Face Learning at K-12 Schools for Remainder of School Year. I realize these past weeks have disrupted normalcy as we know it. However, I want to commend you for being flexible and understanding during this unprecedented time. While this means we will not finish the school year in person, it does not mean that school is canceled.

In the coming weeks, I will be working with local administration, the Van Buren ISD and the Michigan Department of Education to create a plan to ensure our students continue to be provided with resources and learning opportunities. Additional information will be forthcoming the week of April 13th. Part of the Executive Order includes:

-The continued closure of school buildings to students for the remainder of the school year
-The advancement of students to the next grade level for the 2020-21 school year and the graduation of seniors as deemed appropriate by the school district.
-The suspension of the 3rd Grade Reading Law for the 2019-20 school year
-SAT testing for this year’s juniors in the fall of 2020 at the State’s expense
-The continuation of the breakfast and lunch programs in place for school families
-The development of a distance learning plan to be submitted to the ISD for approval by April 28, 2020, and then filed with MDE.
-Students will not be penalized for not having the means to participate in the district’s learning plan.

I understand that this additional information may raise more questions and concerns. Know that we are not alone. Every district across the state of Michigan is dealing with many of the same challenges. Covert has faced and rose above adverse situations in the past and this is no exception. Know that our staff is caring, capable and committed to the work that lies ahead. Yes, we have challenges that we must face. I will tell you that someday, all of us will look back on this and we will know it was a difficult time. And, WE ALL WALKED THROUGH IT TOGETHER.

This situation continues to remain fluid as our governmental, health agencies, legal and educational officials try to understand the COVID-19 virus and its global impact. Please adhere to the Stay Home Stay Safe Order. If you must leave your homes, remember to practice social distancing as well. Continue to check the district website, Facebook page, and your voicemail & email for the most up-to-date information.

Bulldog Strong!
